May 29, 2000 - National D-Day Memorial, Bedford, Virginia

It was brisk and rainy on Memorial Day 2000 in Bedford, Virginia ... the weather much like it was 56 years ago on the shores of Normandy, France. Thousands, including veterans and local citizens gathered at the National D-Day Memorial as the ribbons were cut, officially marking the opening of the Great Arch and Plaza. Members of the US Congress and Virginia Representatives were also present, and included Delegates Goode, Putney, and Goodlatte, Senators Robb and Warner, and Lt. Gov. Hagar. Music by the US Navy Ceremonial Band and the Sea Chanters gave partiotic spirit to the event, and the crown was blessed by remarks about D-Day given by five WWII veterans.

The colors were flown proudly, and the national memorial was opened officially to the world as the two-hour ceremony drew to a close. For more information about the D-Day memorial, visit the national D-Day foundation's web site.
